Rabies
Control
Rabies
is a viral disease of man and other warm-blooded animals. The rabies
virus attacks the central nervous system and, if the disease is not
treated, causes the death of its host. Rabies is usually transmitted
from animal to man via a bite from a rabid animal. The wound is contaminated
with the virus found in the saliva of the infected animal. Usually,
the signs of rabies develop within two to thirteen weeks after the
bite has occurred. If the bite is on the head or face or is of a severe
nature, signs of the disease may manifest themselves in as few as
ten days. Preventing rabies is much more desirable than having to
treat people following an exposure to the virus. Creating a barrier
between the rabies virus and people is an excellent method of prevention.
Immunization of dogs and cats create an effective barrier. All municipalities
under contract with the Middlesex County Public Health Department
offer free vaccination programs for dogs and cats. Vaccinations are
also available through your local vetanarian. Please contact the
municipality to verify date, time, location and the local regulations
prior to the clinic.
