Women gather for law enforcement conference

Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan today announced that about 200 women are expected to attend a day-long conference aimed at helping women develop satisfying and successful careers in law enforcement.

The New Jersey Women in Law Enforcement Conference will be held tomorrow, June 3, 2009, at Rutgers University’s Busch Campus Student Center, 604 Bartholomew Road in Piscataway. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The program concludes at 4 p.m.

The program will bring together women in law enforcement from federal, state, county, and local agencies to discuss important ways to shape their careers.

Among invited guest speakers is state Sen. Barbara Buono, (D-Middlesex) who will discuss legislation and stumbling blocks she has encountered during her political career. Her address is entitled: ‘’A View from the Rotunda: Women in Government.’’

‘’Today Show’’ morning program television personality Al Roker will talk about ‘’Media Issues and Law Enforcement,’’ and will offer insights into his career, and the obstacles he faced as an African-American, to become a successful weatherman and television producer.

In addition, Dr. Teena Cahill, author of ‘’The Cahill Factor: Turning Adversity into Advantage,’’ will discuss the importance and need for women in leadership roles.

Also speaking will be a woman who will share her harrowing experience as the survivor of a kidnapping and sexual assault.

The program is being made possible through the efforts of the MORE (Middlesex Out-Reach and Education) Unit, created by Prosecutor Kaplan to bring a variety of educational and safety programs to the community.
