Two arrested in shooting; victim hospitalized

Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan and Anthony A. Caputo, director of the New Brunswick Police Department, announced today that two people were quickly apprehended and charged in connection with the shooting of a 22-year-old New Brunswick man, who remained in critical but stable condition at a city hospital.

The victim, whose name is being withheld at this time, was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick after he was shot inside a home on Somerset Street on January 15, 2013.

After receiving a call at 5:26 p.m., police arrived at the house, saw a man fleeing the scene, and chased and apprehended him about six blocks away.

The suspect, Lewis Hooper (DOB 3/15/84) of Highland Park, was charged with attempted murder, conspiracy to commit robbery, and possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose.

Police also arrested and charged Chinikka Lockhart, (DOB 4/3/87) who was apprehended near the scene of the shooting. She has been charged with conspiracy to commit robbery.

Lockhart remains in custody in lieu of $150,000 bail. Bail on Hooper has not yet been set.

Charges were filed during an investigation by Detective Kenneth Abode of the New Brunswick Police Department and Investigator Jose Rodriguez of the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office.

The investigation has determined that the shooting was part of a robbery conspiracy, and was not a random act, but details cannot be disclosed at this time.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Abode of the New Brunswick Police Department at (732) 745-5200, or Investigator Rodriguez of the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office at (732) 745-4505.

As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charges against Hooper and Lockhart are accusations and they are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
