Three charged with New Brunswick homicide



Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Anthony A. Caputo, director of the New Brunswick Police Department, announced today that police have arrested and charged three men with fatally shooting a 19-year-old New Brunswick man last weekend.


Each of the three was charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a handgun in the death of Eduardo Mendez on July 13, 2013.


The three defendants are identified as: Edwin Morales (DOB 2/11/93) and Danilo Lemus-Ramos, (DOB 10/28/94) both of New Brunswick, and Adrian Islas (DOB 6/14/88) of North Brunswick.


Morales was arrested in New Brunswick on July 14, 2013 and was held on charges filed in an unrelated case. Lemus-Ramos was arrested in Elizabeth late today, and Islas was arrested in North Brunswick at approximately 1:20 a.m. today.


The three remain in custody. Bail was set at $2 million for Lemus-Ramos and was set at $1.75 million each for Morales and Islas.


The arrests were made during an intensive investigation by Detective Brandt Gregus of the New Brunswick Police Department and Investigator Scott Crocco of the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office.


Acting Prosecutor Andrew Carey stated, ďSince this senseless murder occurred on Saturday, members of the New Brunswick Police Department and the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office have worked carefully, diligently and tirelessly to solve this case and I commend the efforts of all involved.Ē 


The investigation began when police were dispatched to Talmadge Street in New Brunswick at 8:11 p.m. on July 13, 2013, and found the victim outside a house on the 200-block.


The victim was pronounced dead at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick at 8:49 p.m. on July 13, 2013.


An autopsy performed by the Middlesex County Medical Examinerís Office determined the victim had been fatally shot.
