Police investigate Dunellen shooting


Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Chief Jeffrey Nelson of the Dunellen Police Department announced that authorities are investigating the shooting of a Dunellen man, who was wounded today after police arrived at a house to arrest him on criminal charges filed in New Brunswick.


The man, whose identity is being withheld at this time, was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he is listed in stable condition.


Three Dunellen police officers also were taken to the hospital. None of them was wounded.


A preliminary investigation by the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office has determined that the three officers were dispatched to the house on Columbia Street in Dunellen at 1:25 p.m. to arrest the man on charges including aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child.


As the officers attempted to apprehend the man, a struggle ensued. The man drew a weapon and was wounded. It should be noted that none of the police officers weapons was fired.


In accordance with state guidelines, the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office immediately took control of the investigation and notified the state Office of the Attorney General.


The investigation is active and is continuing.
