Murder, weapons charges filed against Edison man


††††††††† Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan and Anthony A. Caputo, director of the New Brunswick Police Department, announced that an Edison man was charged today with fatally shooting a 21-year-old woman and wounding a 28-year-old man in New Brunswick last month.


Darryll Underwood (DOB 4/13/93) was charged with the murder of Jessica Torres, 21, of North Brunswick and the attempted murder of the 28-year-old man, whose identity is being withheld at this time.


Underwood also was charged with possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose and possession of an illegal handgun.


Bail was set at $1.5 million.


An investigation by Detective Ronoldy Martinez of the New Brunswick Police Department and Investigator Michael Daniewicz of the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office determined that Underwood had targeted the 28-yer-old male, and shot him and Ms. Torres as they stood outside the Progressive Masonic Temple on Hale Street in New Brunswick on October 6, 2012.


The investigation into the murder began when a 911 call alerted them to the shooting, which occurred shortly before 2:13 a.m. on October 6, 2012.


Police arrived to find the victims had been wounded. Ms Torres was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where she was pronounced dead.


The 28-year-old man, identified as an acquaintance of Ms. Torres, also was taken to the hospital and was treated for multiple gunshot wounds.


Underwood was served today with the charges at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick, where he has been held since October 16, 2012, on charges of shooting and wounding a 21-year-old New Brunswick man in an unrelated incident on Easton Avenue in New Brunswick on September 22, 2012.

As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charges against Underwood are accusations and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
