Middle school teacher arrested

Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan and East Brunswick Police Director Barry Roberson today announced the arrest of a teacher on charges of sexually assaulting a student at the Hammarskjold Middle School in the township.

Yinfu Sun, (DOB 9/29/52) of South First Avenue in Highland Park, was arrested at his home on the evening of March 31, 2009, and was charged with sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

An investigation by Detective Sean Goggins of the East Brunswick Police Department, and Investigator Raj Chopra of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office determined that Sun had improper contact with the student at the school on three occasions in March 2009. Children between the ages of 11 and 13 attend sixth and seventh grades at the school on Rues Lane in East Brunswick.

The investigation began after the victim’s relatives learned of the assaults and contacted police.

Sun has been suspended from his teaching job, with pay, pending the outcome of the charges. He began teaching in East Brunswick on Sept. 10, 1990. During his first nine years with the district, he taught at both Hammarskjold and Frost Elementary School. He has been teaching exclusively at Hammarskjold for the past 10 years.

Sun is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center. Bail has been set at $150,000. He must post the full amount before he can be released from custody.

As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charges against Sun are merely accusations and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
