Man charged with homicide; assault

††††††††† Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Anthony A. Caputo, director of the New Brunswick Police Department, announced today that a New Brunswick man has been arrested and charged with the murder of another city resident and wounding two other men with a broken bottle.

Ernesto Monroy, 28, of New Brunswick is being held on a charge of murder, which was filed following the death on June 8, 2014 of Anastacio Hernandez, 53, of New Brunswick.

The cause of death remains under investigation, but preliminary reports indicate Mr. Hernandez had been beaten.

Monroy also was charged with two counts of aggravated assault for using the broken bottle to wound a 34-year-old man and a 37-year-old man, both New Brunswick residents.

In addition, Monroy was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

He is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center in North Brunswick in lieu of $1 million bail.

An investigation by Detective Ronoldy Martinez of the New Brunswick Police Department and Investigator Frank DiNinno of the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office determined that Monroy assaulted the three men following a party at a home on Seaman Street in New Brunswick.

Police were dispatched to the home at approximately 8 p.m. on June 7, 2014 and arrived to find the three men had been injured.

They were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where Mr. Hernandez was pronounced dead at 5:57 p.m. on June 8, 2014.

The other two men were treated and released.

The investigation is active and is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Martinez of the New Brunswick Police Department at (732) 745-5217, or Investigator DiNinno of the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office at (732) 745-4194.

As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charges against Monroy are merely accusations and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
