Former police officer charged with arson

Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Robert Hubner, director of the Woodbridge Police Department, announced today that a former Carteret police officer has been arrested on a charge of setting fire to his home in the Port Reading section of Woodbridge.

David Boland (DOB 8/16/61) of 15 Goodfellow Drive, Port Reading was charged on October 23, 2013 with a count of aggravated arson after he voluntarily appeared at the Woodbridge Police Department.

He is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center in North Brunswick in lieu of $150,000 bail.

The charge was filed after an investigation by Detective Thomas DellaSala of the Woodbridge Police Department and Investigator Todd O’Malley of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office determined that the fire at Boland’s home on October 20, 2013 had been intentionally set.

Police were alerted to the fire at 12:34 p.m., when a neighbor saw smoke coming from Boland’s home.

The blaze, which began in a first-floor bedroom that had been converted to an office, was extinguished in about two hours. No one was injured, but damage to the home was extensive.

“Aggravated arson recklessly endangers the lives of first responders and neighboring residents,’’ Acting Prosecutor Carey said. “I commend the efforts of the firefighters and members of law enforcement who worked quickly to extinguish the fire and alleviate any further risk to life,’’ he said.

Boland, who served as a police officer in Carteret for more than 13 years, retired on a disability pension in October 1998.

The investigation is active and continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective DellaSala of the Woodbridge Police Department at (732) 634-7700, or Investigator O’Malley of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at (732) 745-3908.

As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charge against Boland is merely an accusation and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
