Fifth suspect arrested in New Brunswick homicide

††††††††† Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan and Anthony A. Caputo, director of the New Brunswick Police Department, announced today that members of the U.S. Marshals Service have arrested a fifth suspect who was being sought in the attempted robbery and fatal shooting of a 19-year-old man in New Brunswick last September.

Zaid Joseph (DOB 1/24/92) of the Kendall Park section of South Brunswick was apprehended on March 27, 2013, after U.S. Marshals obtained the address of an apartment where he had been staying in the Bronx.

Joseph is among five defendants who were charged with felony murder following the fatal shooting on September 27, 2012, of Joshua Zhou, 19, of New Brunswick.

The five men were identified and charged during the investigation by Detective Kenneth Abode of the New Brunswick Police Department and Investigator Scott Crocco of the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office.

The investigation determined that the five men intended to rob the victim, who was shot while he was at a house on Robinson Street in New Brunswick.

The investigation further showed that the five men targeted the victim and that the shooting was not random.

Previously arrested and charged are Michael Bailey, (DOB 11/5/91) and Dawonne Cooper, (DOB 5/4/90) both of New Brunswick, and Jeffrey Andre Cook (DOB 11/10/92) and Larry Pena (DOB 7/17/93) both of the Somerset section of Franklin Township.

The men remain in custody and are awaiting trial. No trial date has been set.

Prosecutor Kaplan thanked the U.S. Marshals Service Regional Fugitive Task Force for its efforts to locate and apprehend Joseph.

The investigation is active and continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Abode of the New Brunswick Police Department at (732) 745-5200, or Investigator Crocco of the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office at (732) 745-4471.

As is the case with all criminal defendants, Joseph, Bailey, Cooper, Cook and Pena are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
