Basketball coach charged with sexually assaulting teenager

Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey announced today that the Dunellen recreation director and former Middlesex County College basketball coach has been arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a male teenager who was a member of the coachís travelling Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball team.

Christopher Tarver, 43, of Jackson Township was arrested on April 8, 2014 in Jackson and was charged with a second degree count of endangering the welfare of a child. He also was charged today with a second degree count of sexual assault and a fourth degree count of criminal sexual contact.

He is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center in North Brunswick in lieu of $225,000 bail.

Tarver was arrested and charged after Investigator Karleen Duca and Investigator Frank DiNinno, both of the Middlesex County Prosecutorís Office, determined that the defendant sexually assaulted the male in Edison and in Dunellen on a number of occasions between 2010 and 2012.

During that time, the male was a member of the Monmouth Power Sports Club, a travelling basketball team affiliated with the AAU. Tarver has been the coach and executive director of the team since 1995.

Members of the Jackson Township Police Department and the Ocean County Prosecutorís Office assisted with the investigation.

Tarver has been employed as the Dunellen recreation director since 2004. He also worked as the recreation director in North Plainfield from February of 2008 until February of 2013.

In addition, he was employed as a basketball coach at Middlesex County College from October 21, 2006 to March 5, 2014 and became the collegeís head basketball coach on June 24, 2010.

The investigation is active and is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Investigator Duca at (732) 745-4452, or Investigator DiNinno at (732) 745-4194.

As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charges against Tarver are merely accusations and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
