Mrs. Sheng-hung Chen was born in Jiangsu, China. Having lived in U.S. for about ten years, she is now a naturalized US citizen. Mrs. Chen is well known in the Chinese community of New Jersey for her talent in the design and teaching of Chinese decorative knotting. She learned this folk craft from her mother as a child when she was growing up in China. She further studied Chinese knotting in Taiwan.

Mrs. Chen is completely devoted to reviving this intricate art, which requires patience and creativity. She has been teaching the art of Chinese knotting at the Mid-Jersey Chinese school of East Brunswick, the senior citizens Evergreen Club in Edison, and the Culture Club of Douglass College in New Brunswick. Her works have been displayed at various workshops, exhibitions, cultural festivals, Chinese schools, local public libraries, churches, and in corporations such as AT&T and Johnson & Johnson during the celebration of the Asian American Heritage Month. Due to her tireless efforts, there has been renewed interest in the art of Chinese knotting in Central New Jersey.

In 2002, Mrs. Chen received the statewide recognition as the Master Artist of Chinese
Decorative Knotting. She was awarded the Folk Arts Apprenticeship grant from the New Jersey State Council of the Arts, Folk Arts Program funded in part with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
