OF N.J. NOTARY PUBLIC OATHS
County Clerk's Office can supply you with an application to become a
Notary Public. The completed application must be forwarded either to
one of your Assemblypersons or your State Senator who represents the
town in which you reside with the appropriate fee. He or she will endorse
your application and forward it to the Secretary of State for processing.
Once you receive your certificate of commission, you have 90 days in
which to appear in person at the County Clerk's Office to take your
oath of office. You may NOT act as a notary until you have taken
this oath. There is a County Clerk filing fee of $15.00 payable by cash,
check or money order. Your commission is valid for a period of five
completed application along with a $25.00 check payable to the State
of New Jersey to one of the legislators at the link below. He or she
will Sign off on the application and then forward it to Trenton. Trenton
will send your completed paperwork to you and you must come into the
County Clerk's office to be sworn in. Monday, Wednesday - Friday: 8:30am to 4:00pm. Tuesday: 8:00am to 6:00pm.
One may now apply online to become a Notary Public, however, they must still come into our office to take their oath. The online application may be obtained and completed at www.nj.gov/njbgs.
The Office of the Middlesex County Clerk has satellite offices in the Townships of Edison and Woodbridge every 1st Thursday of the month. Working hand in hand with the Municipal Clerk’s office, the service hours are as follows:
Edison Township-100 Municipal Blvd. 8:30 am – 11:00 am
Woodbridge Township- 1 Main Street 12:00 pm- 3:00 pm
Please bring commission papers received from Trenton along with a $15.00 filing fee in the form of check or money order payable to “Middlesex County Clerk”; no cash is accepted. There may be schedule modifications on certain months, so please call the County Clerk’s Notary Department at (732) 745-5723, The Edison Municipal Clerk’s Office at (732) 248-7350, or the Woodbridge Municipal Clerk’s Office at (732) 634-4500.
NOTARY CERTIFICATIONS/NOTARY FLAGS
A notary certification or “notary flag” attests to the legal status of NJ Notaries Public who have notarized documents to be used in business transactions. If the Notary Public is registered in Middlesex County, the original notarized document is brought into our office and a “notary flag” is obtained. There is a $5.00 fee for each signature that is certified.
An apostille is issued by the NJ Department of the Treasury, Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services. An apostille certifies the signature of the County Clerk who administered the certification or “notary flag”. Further information on apostilles may be obtained online at www.nj.gov/njbgs .
